A native of Lins, in the state of São Paulo, Maria Aparecida Soares Ruas earned her degree in Mathematics from São Paulo State University (UNESP), Araraquara campus, and completed her graduate studies at the University of São Paulo (USP), including a research period at Brown University. She joined the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (ICMC) at the beginning of her academic career, where she developed her entire trajectory as a professor and researcher.

 

She distinguished herself in the fields of Differential Geometry and Singularity Theory, playing a decisive role in the creation and consolidation of the Singularity Theory Group in São Carlos, helping establish the institute as a leading center in the field. Her career combines significant scientific contributions to the study of the geometric and topological properties of singularities with a strong commitment to the training of new researchers, having supervised numerous master's and doctoral students throughout her career.

 

She was among the 172 signatories of the founding charter of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), participating in the creation of the country's leading organization for the mathematical sciences. She was later inducted into the Brazilian Academy of Sciences [link] and elected a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) [link], an international distinction awarded to outstanding scientists for their contributions to the advancement of science in developing countries.
